Apple’s First Foldable iPhone Is Finally Real — Meet iPhone Duo
After years of watching Samsung, Google and others normalize folding phones, Apple has entered the category. iPhone Duo is a $1,999 flagship that opens into the largest display ever fitted to an iPhone — but its most important idea may be making the fold feel less exotic.

Apple officially unveiled iPhone Duo on September 9, 2026. It uses a 5.4-inch outer display and a 7.6-inch inner display. The device starts at $1,999 in the U.S., with pre-orders beginning October 16 and general availability starting October 23.
Two screens, one iPhone
Closed, iPhone Duo uses a compact outer display. Opened, the 7.6-inch inner panel becomes the largest screen Apple has shipped on an iPhone. Apple says both displays share the same aspect ratio, helping content transition predictably between folded and unfolded modes.

Hardware built around the hinge
Apple says the hinge contains more than 100 components and the inner display is supported by a titanium plate. The chassis uses grade 5 titanium, while Ceramic Shield protects the rear and Ceramic Shield 2 covers the outer display. Those durability claims still need long-term independent testing.
iOS 27 is the real foldable experiment
The inner display can run two apps side by side, two windows from the same app, saved app pairs and wider layouts. Apple says Netflix, Zoom and Slack already have Duo-specific experiences, giving developers a reason to treat the form factor as a first-class iPhone target.

Cameras and Touch ID adapt to the fold
The rear system combines a 48MP Fusion Main and 48MP Fusion Ultra Wide camera. Folding enables rear-camera selfies framed on the outer screen, hands-free capture and dual-display FaceTime. Touch ID returns in the side button, a practical choice because authentication needs to work when the phone is open, closed or propped at an angle.
A $1,999 halo product
At $1,999 before higher storage tiers, Duo is not a mainstream iPhone replacement. It is a first-generation flagship for buyers who specifically value the larger canvas and new multitasking model. That gives Apple room to prove reliability and usefulness before deciding how aggressively foldables should spread through the range.

Why this matters beyond Apple
Apple entering a mature hardware category can change developer priorities, accessory ecosystems and consumer expectations even when it is not first. The fold itself is no longer novel. Making it feel invisible in everyday use is the harder problem — and that is where iPhone Duo will be judged.
